The making of our pop-up store.

Posted on August 15, 2012

It’s always fun to do little movies of our adventures. So far there is only a few on our youtube channel but there are more to come! If you want to have a look at our how our pop-up shop was created have a look at this little minute movie. Over three days we were able to recreate a small lifeless space into an explosion of colour. I was up ladders and all even being 7mths pregnant!

We love how Lisa of The Red Thread has used one of our cage lights above her loft bed!

Our first shop!

Posted on August 13, 2012

We are regularly asked when we will open a physical shop. The fact is that although we fantasise about a wonderful warehouse space to show off our wares we chose an online store as part of the family lifestyle we were after. Steve and I can quite happily swing between spending quality time our daughter, time sharing the care and each doing our part in the business. Life is actually pretty good this way. However we couldn’t resist the opportunity of a pop up shop when we were offered it. Ron Hall a successful Melbourne retail entrepreneur and owner of The Industrial Revolution spotted us in The Melbourne Weekly recently and a venture of like-minded creatives begun. What resulted was an Empirical Style pop-up store within The Industrial Revolution, 1114 High st, Armadale. Please pop-in or have a look below…

Some songs just get completely stuck in your head! I love this electro pop tune from Urban Thief, it brings a joyful splash of colour to this very grey day. Have a listen.

Rock n Roll royalty with an empirical style.

We always find it quite  funny and lovely when some customers visit our showroom and gush about how much they loved seeing Steve on Top Design. We however are equally excited when famous faces are in our home wanting to look at our Empirical Style wares. Today we were blessed with rock n roll royalty Tex Perkins purchasing the Sundew chart as a present! But now he’s gone ‘and the honeymoon is over baby..’!

Wintery.

It’s very wintery here in Melbourne right now!

Thank you mothers.

On looking around our home yesterday for mothers day blog inspiration I was struck by how many of the Charley Harper prints in our bedroom are of mothering birds. I guess nesting could be synonymous with care giving and thus all the imagery.

Below is our bedroom with our favourite Charley Harper bird prints. We also sell these framed pictures in our shop. The inspiration comes from Todd Oldham‘s holiday home pictured below. He’s a wonderfully colourful and eclectic designer. We first came across him when he hosted the American version of Top Design and have visited his store in New York on our last trip there.
